Overview — what Ledger Live does
Ledger Live acts as the bridge between your Ledger hardware wallet and the blockchain network. The app is available as a desktop client (Windows, macOS, Linux) and as a mobile app (iOS, Android). It lets you create and manage accounts for supported cryptocurrencies, perform transactions, check balances and activity, participate in staking (where supported), and access integrated services such as exchanges and fiat on-ramps — while ensuring that private keys never leave the hardware device.
Core features
Private keys are generated and stored inside the secure element of your Ledger device. All transaction signing happens on-device, meaning Ledger Live never has access to your seed or private keys.
Ledger Live supports hundreds of coins and tokens. You can add multiple accounts, manage ERC-20 tokens, and view aggregated portfolio balances in one place.
Compose transactions in Ledger Live and confirm details on your Ledger device screen prior to signing. Always verify receiving addresses on the device display to avoid address-manipulation attacks.
Built-in swap and exchange partners allow seamless asset conversion without exposing private keys. Swaps are executed via third-party providers and require device confirmation.
Stake supported coins directly through Ledger Live or partner services to earn rewards. Ledger Live highlights earning opportunities and shows expected yields and lockup details where applicable.
Portfolio view aggregates balances across all accounts and devices, showing performance, market value, and historical charts for easier tracking and reporting.
Install & initial setup
- Download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website or from your device’s app store. Always verify the URL and distribution channel to avoid malicious downloads.
- Install the desktop or mobile app and open it. When first launched, Ledger Live will prompt you to either set up a new Ledger device or to connect an existing one.
- Connect your Ledger hardware wallet with the supplied USB cable (or Bluetooth for Ledger Nano X) and follow the on-screen instructions. Ledger Live may prompt you to install or update firmware on your device — accept only official updates.
- Create or recover wallets: choose to initialize a new device (generate a new recovery phrase and PIN) or recover from an existing 24-word (or supported length) recovery phrase. Record your recovery phrase on paper or a durable backup — never digitally.
- Finish by adding accounts for the cryptocurrencies you want to manage. Ledger Live will synchronize the account balances and transaction history from the blockchain.
Security best practices
- Keep your recovery phrase offline: Store it physically and redundantly (paper + metal backup if available). Do not take photos, screenshots, or store the seed in cloud services.
- Confirm addresses on-device: Always compare the receiving address shown in Ledger Live with the one displayed on your Ledger device before sending funds.
- Use a strong PIN: Set a PIN on the device and keep it secret. A PIN protects access to the device if it is lost or stolen.
- Beware of phishing: Never enter your recovery phrase into apps, websites, or messages. Legitimate Ledger updates never ask for your recovery phrase.
- Firmware & app updates: Update Ledger Live and your device firmware from within the official app only. Do not install firmware from unofficial sources.
Troubleshooting
Device not recognized
Try a different USB port or cable. On mobile, ensure the OTG adapter or Bluetooth connection is set up properly (Nano X only). Check Ledger Live’s detection troubleshooting guide and ensure the device is unlocked and on the home screen.
Firmware update issues
Reboot your computer/phone and retry. Do not unplug the device during an update. If the device becomes unresponsive, consult Ledger’s official support — using only the official recovery process.
Missing funds / sync delay
Blockchain reindexing or network congestion can delay balance updates. Use the “Resync” or “Repair” account option in Ledger Live to re-fetch transaction history from the node.
Forgot PIN
Forgetting your PIN requires a factory reset and recovery using your recovery phrase. If you lack the recovery phrase, funds cannot be restored.
Advanced usage & integrations
Ledger Live can be used alongside third-party wallets and services that support hardware wallets. Advanced users may integrate Ledger with desktop wallets, use custom nodes, or leverage developer APIs. Additionally, Ledger Live provides features for power users like custom fee settings, transaction history export, and support for multiple devices under one application.
For staking and yield opportunities, evaluate the risks and lockup terms carefully. Ledger Live displays partner information and expected yields — always verify details before committing funds.
Frequently asked questions
